Why do people go on pretending?

I know the world has high expectations to meet. But you can't be something you're not - everyone can tell when you pretend, mostly because many people are bad at pretending.

And why should we? If we aren't up to standard and can never be, just accept that you're not on par. Change the things you can, and accept those you can't. If you're meant to be that way, then you deserve whatever criticism is thrown at you for being so. You just need to be able to distinguish between what you can make an impact on and what you'll never be able to change. Artistic talent? Don't think so. But carbon emissions? Sure. Don't give up too quick.

Every time you pretend, ask yourself: is it for the better or for the worse? You may spin up a whole web of lies. It only takes one false move to have the whole web just collapse under the weight of the truth. People will start asking questions. Questions you don't have the answers to.

Pretending for a long time doesn't make it any more credible. So what if you'll be more 'accepted' in society? Does that mean we should peel off all the onion layers that represent and define 'you'? Why should we be afraid to be honest? Why do we need to pretend?
